Defending NYC's Wildlife
GooseWatch NYC advocates for compassion for, tolerance of and co-existence with urban wildlife, and promotes humane approaches to resolving conflicts with our wild neighbors.
New York City is home to nearly 9 million people, and hundreds of species of wildlife call our five boroughs home: Canada geese, wild turkeys, mute swans, and more than 600 species of birds, as well as deer, coyote, raccoons, seals, whales, turkeys, and many other creatures live within our five boroughs.
Whether passing through the area on their migration, or year-round residents of our parks and streets, these wild creatures are our neighbors - yet too often these animals are vilified as unwelcome invaders, and when they interfere with or threaten our comfort and sense of safety they may pay with their lives.
GooseWatch NYC seeks humane alternatives to ineffective lethal wildlife management policies, public input in wildlife management decisionmaking, and transparency in government and private management of our wildlife.
Why Kill?
USDA Wildlife Services has waged war on our nation’s wildlife for more than a century, killing millions of wild animals in the name of protecting crops, farm animals, aviation safety, private property and even other species such as rare birds and prey species favored by hunters.
Alternatives
Whether facing aviation safety challenges, health and safety concerns, or general nuisance issues, non-lethal management strategies should be prioritized and exhausted prior to engaging in lethal removal of wildlife.
In addition to the constant threat of extermination, wild animals are exposed to a range of everyday perils, from litter, traffic, poachers, discarded fishing lines, poor diet, exposure to poisons, pesticides, and skyscraper windows - just to name a few obstacles these creatures face.
